Throughout history Europe has seen many wars and conflicts, as well as progress and developments. In the 20th century there was two world wars both centered around Europe. Millions of the people were killed, and there were human rights violations throughout. Human right issues have considerably improved, but not enough. Western Europe is more free than most regions around the world there is a marked increase in racism and anti-immigrant policies. Eastern parts of Europe have seen an increase in conflicts since the break up of the former Soviet Union. Numerous conflicts have resulted in gross human rights violations and a lot of suffering and killing of civilians.
