I was given the task to answer two questions, 1) why do nuclear weapons continue to threaten the future of the human race?, and 2) what should we do about nuclear weapons? I answered them to the best of my abilities and I hope it gets the point across.
Nuclear weapons continue to threaten the future of the human race because they’re the most lethal weapons human beings have ever devised. The United States, Russia, Great Britain, France, China, India, Israel, and Pakistan all have nuclear weapons. North Korea probably has two nuclear weapons and is capable of producing more. Iran and perhaps other countries have nuclear programs that can lead to the production of nuclear weapons. A Hiroshima-size nuclear bomb is capable of destroying most of New York City, London, Moscow, or Beijing. If that same bomb exploded over anyone of those cities, or any other city for that matter, it would release long-lived radiation making the city unlivable for any survivor. Nuclear weapons have been used twice by the United States in World War II. Once over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. They flattened both cities and killed nearly 200,000 people immediately. Just as many people died from cancers and blast-related injuries. At least 5,000 of the 30,000 nuclear bombs are on a hair trigger alert and are ready to launch in less than 5 minutes. Every nation including, all people living there, want o acquire nuclear weapons because they are scared that a nuclear war will happen so they just want to be prepared.
What should we do about nuclear weapons? I personally believe that we should not have nuclear weapons in our society because I don’t feel that they are at all necessary. To me, having them is a huge cause for people to start a war with us, and if you’ve ever lost a really close family member in a war you’d understand more of why I think this. While I’ve been learning about nuclear bombs and activities I’ve been thinking that if we ever did get into a nuclear battle of some sort so many of us would lose our lives. All I really think about is my brother, even when I think about war all I can think about is Josh so if he was still alive, he’d be fighting in a nuclear battle and I don’t think I could handle that any better then from when he was fighting in Iraq. I also think about how my older brother Hayden would have to fight in it because he followed in Josh’s footsteps and is in the Marines. So to answer this question I’d say that we should just get rid of them or lock them up and never touch them again.
