Scenario 1:
You come upon the scene of an accident. As you approach the accident, you notice that it just happened and that you are the first on the scene. The vehicle is on its side and a man is trying to get out. You stop and he tells you his wife and child are still in the car. The wife is unconscious; the man is not making a lot of sense and the child is crying hysterically. What do you do? Describe in as great detail as possible the steps you can take to help and any care you can provide. Hint: I have given you clues about symptoms in this little story.
Scenario 2:
You are at a party. You hear that an acquaintance of yours appears sick. You go to the bedroom where he has been placed and see that he is slurring his speech, is unable to focus on you or follow a train of thought. As you attempt to talk to him his head slumps numerous times and he doesn’t appear to be aware of what is happening. What should you do?
Scenario 3:
You are hiking in the woods with some friends. About 5 miles from the trailhead, your friend slips on a rock and comes down hard on his ankle. You hear cracking. He goes down and is unable to get up on his own. He cries out in pain. What can you do?

Lesson 5: Drug Addiction is a Disease--So What Do We Do about It?

Objective: The learner will make predictions about the success rate for treatment of addiction compared with the success rate for other chronic diseases. Then the learner will evaluate case studies of individuals with different diseases to compare and contrast how the diseases are similar to, or different from, the others.

To Do:
  1. Finish reading and discussing the lesson. Be ready to turn in your questions AND the answers.
  2. Go back to page 97 and discuss each of the objectives. If anyone in the group cannot make a relevant contribution, the rest of the group must explain and/or show where in the reading the information can be found.
  3. Methodically and carefully discuss each objective, soliciting a response from EVERYONE in the group for EVERY objective.
  4. Evaluating the Cases Handout – Do NOT attempt to answer the questions in the space provided on the handout. Answer in detail with examples on a separate piece of paper.

Case Study Questions Directions:

1.       Discuss each case separately for questions 1-6:
a.       You will have 3 answers for questions 1-6 (18 answers total)
b.      One set for Ruth, one for Mike and one for Carol.
c.       Stop making it complicated. You are answering questions 1-6 three times. One time for each case. That is why you are writing answers on your own paper.
2.       Discuss the cases together for questions 7-11 (only one set required)
