    • What is the status of the crisis in Syria?
    • What have some Syrian civilians said about the situation there?
    • What has the government said?
    • According to the program: What kind of information has U.S. intelligence gathered with regard to Syria?
    • How might the U.S. government use this information?
    • Do you think that the international community should take action regarding this crisis? If so, how? If not, why not?
  3. Create a blog titled: CNN Student News Questions
  4. Post your answers to this blog.

    Current Events Daily Warm Up
    Objective:
    1. The learner will be able to determine important events happening in the world by researching international news stories
    2. The learner will be able to analyze and discuss these issues in an international context
    Instructions:
    1. Log in to your computer and your account on My Alternative High (if you do not have an account, put your name on the sign up sheet on my desk and proceed to #3)
    2. Post a new blog called “Current Events”
    3. In a new window or tab, go to:
      1. CNN.com
      2. CBS News
      3. ABC News
      4. Reuters
      5. BBC News Online
      6. World News
      7. The Associated Press
      8. The New York Times
      9. Guardian Unlimited
      10. CBC News Online
      11. DO NOT USE GOOGLE TO FIND ARTICLES!!!
    4. Locate an international news story from one of the sites listed above and create a shortcut to it on your desktop (right click on your mouse to create shortcut)
    5. Read the story and write a response. Your response must answer the 5 journalist questions: Who, what, where, when and why.
      1. Who: Person, country, region, organization, group, etc.
      2. What: What is it about? What is going on? What is happening? What happened? Etc.
      3. Where: Could be more than one place; could be a specific location, a region, country, etc.
      4. When: Is it a one-time event or part of something that is ongoing? How?
      5. Why: Why is this significant? Who does it affect? What are the consequences?
    6. Your response must contain a first paragraph that answers all of the above 5 questions, and a second paragraph that includes your personal reaction to the event.
    7. Post your response on your blog. Maintain one blog for current events. DO not create a new blog for every story/response; include a link to the original story at the end of each one. I do want a link to that story
    8. Title your current events blog “Current Events Blog”
    9. Maintain this blog daily. The first 10 minutes of every class period will be devoted to this activity. It will end at 8:15, wherever you might be.

     

    February 6th, Monday

    Objectives:
    1. The learner will be able to demonstrate prior knowledge by constructing a list of current global issues 
    2. The learner will be able to demonstrate prior knowledge by drawing a map of the world from memory 
    3. The learner will be able to read and understand the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

      Materials needed:

      1.       Binder paper
      2.       Blank paper
      3.       Pen/pencil

      Step 1: Locate 3 full length news articles related to your right

      Step 2: Post a link to each article into your blog. Make sure the link opens in a new window. Make sure each link is formatted as the title of the news article.

      Step 3: Locate at least 2 pictures that depict your article being violated, and 2 pictures that depict it being upheld.

      Step 4: Upload your pictures to your blog and format them. Plenty of people in the room can help if you are clueless.

      Step 5: Read your news articles. If you are unable to get to a computer, ask someone to print your articles for you.

      Step 6: Write commentary about your news articles in two paragraphs. In the first, use the reporter’s formula in answering the questions “Who”, “Why”, “Where”, “What” and “When” to summarize the article. In the second, provide a thoughtful discussion of how this article relates to the UDHR Article you are highlighting.

      First Paragraph:

      1.      Who was involved? This includes groups, organizations and countries as well as people

      2.      What happened? Explain the event in terms of the main issues surrounding the event and describing the event itself.

      3.      Where did it happen? It may not be just one place; it could also be a city, region, country, etc.

      4.      When did it happen? Explain whether it is an ongoing thing or if it is something that happened just once (like a natural disaster, for example).

      5.      Why did it happen? This includes explaining the reasons for the event happening in the first place

      Second Paragraph

      Write a 150 word minimum paragraph explaining how this human right relates to your UDHR Article and include your personal feelings about it.

      Introduction to class
      Directions:
      1.       On a piece of binder paper, list as many global issues as you can think of.
      2.       On a blank piece of paper, draw a map of the world as best you can without looking at any maps.
      3.       Read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (on my desk when I check off #1-2)
       
      Materials needed: Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
      Directions:
      1. Identify your first choice, which is the article you most want to research
      2. Go to amnesty.org and hrw.org to locate information about your article and areas where it is of concern
      3. Begin a blog. The title of your blog should be the article you are showcasing. For example, “Article 1”.
      4. Your blog should contain information all about your article, including current event news stories, photos, and your own writing.

      Human Rights Mural                                                                                                 Due: End of semester
      The class will produce a human rights mural that contains pictures, your own writing about specific rights and issues, summaries of news stories and current events and descriptions of human rights problems around the world. This mural will have a world map associated with it that will highlight world regions and countries and their record of respecting human rights.
      Objectives
      1.      The learner will be able to read, understand and discuss the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
      2.      The learner will be able to explain what the UDHR is, where it came from and why we have it
      3.      The learner will be able to identify categories of human rights, distribute the articles evenly amongst themselves, and produce a mural that depicts:
      a.      Human rights issues in different regions and countries
      b.      Current events that relate to human rights
      c.       Causes and reasons for human rights abuses in different regions and countries
      d.      Solutions
      Directions
      1.      First, answer the following questions in elaborated paragraphs
      a.      What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
      b.      How did we get it? (History of the document)
      c.       Why do we have the UDHR?
      2.      Second, divide the list amongst yourselves. These are the articles you will be responsible for researching.
      3.      Third, locate and gather material that depict:
      a.      Human rights issues in different regions and countries
      b.      Current events that relate to human rights
      c.       Causes and reasons for human rights abuses in different regions and countries
      d.      Solutions
      4.      You must write your own original pieces that go with the issues you have selected
      Jan. 11th
      Objectives
      1. Recognize and explain various threats to the world’s fresh water supply
      2. Analyze and evaluate the role of governments, private companies and humanitarian organizations in providing drinkable water to water scarce regions
      3. Analyze and evaluate the impact of fresh water scarcity on developing countries
      We will begin once EVERYONE has the following:

      Jan 3rd - 9th
      Objectives:
      1.       Explain how the Earth’s atmosphere acts as a thermal barrier
      2.       Explain why carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are increasing
      3.       Construct a model that explains the process of global warming
      4.       Describe what a warmer Earth would be like
      Directions:
      1.       On a blank piece of paper draw a detailed diagram that shows the process of global warming
      2.       Use the packet I gave you called “Global Warming” to find information and identify key terms
      3.       Include a glossary of key terms
      4.       You must have an explanation for every item on your diagram. This explanation must be in your own words.
      Cheat: You may make more than one diagram.
      Section 3 Global Warming
      1.       Preview the article. Study the objectives and use the key terms for your diagram
      2.       Read all the information. It will be useful for the diagrams you are making as well as answering questions in the packet.
      3.       Page 345: Do #1-6
      4.       Use the key terms on page 346 for your diagrams
      5.       Page 347: Complete page
      6.       Page 348: 19, 21-24, 26-27
      7.       Page 349: Choose either 34, 35 or 36
      8.       Pages 350-351: We may do the lab depending on time

      Objectives:
      1. The learner will be able to investigate, analyze and interpret current world problems and demonstrate learning through a blog based on a rubric.
      2. The learner will understand the social, economic and political consequences of global warming by viewing and discussing Six Degrees Could Change the World (National Geographic, 2008)
      8:00 - 8:10 Warm Up - World Problem Blogs
      Try to get something accomplished. This could be editing, formatting, writing, adding items, etc. Remember to choose a new project when you finish one.
      * Reminder for each blog:
      1. 500 words of your own original writing in your own voice
      2. 5 formatted images (appropriate size, aligned left or right, spacing around the image, etc.)

      View and discuss film; we will be completing some activities that Natiional Geographic designed for classes that watch this video.

      Good morning. Hope you all had a good weekend.
      Objective: As a result of this lesson, the learner will be able to analyze and interpret various current world problems.
      Agenda:
      1. Continue working on projects.
      2. If you think you are done, meaning you have at least 5 pages of excellent notes, at least 500 words of your own orginal writing on your blog (based on your notes and reflections, NOT material you paraphrased from your sources, at least 5 formatted pictures, at least 5 formatted links to more information, and at least 1 other cool thing that you add to make your blog special (like a video or a slideshow or something); if you have done all that, you may start a new one.
      3. Remember to go to the World Studies Agenda from the Classes tab on the home page. Remember to go to Human Rights to see the list of projects.

      Special message: Tomorrow is the end of the first three weeks. Your first project must be posted today in its entirely. Be sure you do that. Also, you will be given a self evaluation to complete in the last 10 minutes of class.

      1. Successfully completing a quality blog on your project

      1. Go to the Human Rights page and select an assignment from the left column (the right column contains extra resources in case all the links for your activity don't work) DO NOT SEARCH FOR STUFF ON YOUR OWN ON GOOGLE!!!
      2. Post a blog stating the theme and title of your current project.
        1. Describe your project in a short paragraph (75-100 words)
        2. Post a picture that you format by using the tutorials (e.g. left, right, space around image, size, etc.)  
      3. When you have done this, continue working on your activity and post all your work to your blog.

      11/21 - 11/22

      1. Log in to a computer and My Alternative High
      2. Go to your pages (i.e. My Pages)
      3. Open your page and click edit
      4. Open the tutorials (found on the question mark icon under the sign in/create account icons)
      5. Read the tutorials. YOU MUST READ ALL OF THE TUTORIALS STARTING AT #3 and take notes. Submit your notes for points.
       
      Substantial Daily Post Required for Credit
       
      What does this mean? It means no token posts of a few lines and a crumby, unformatted picture. Come on. That is lame. These are meant to be engaging, thought provoking, visually appealing, etc. They are substantial. Not weak. Not full of silly mistakes. Not lame. Got it? Thank you. Believe it or not you have an audience of thousands and you don’t want to look like a lazy a** slacker idiot.
      Be nice to me and each other by doing your work and not complaining about it or being rude or acting like this time doesn’t matter.

    Brees, It would really help me out if you updated the world history agenda blog everyday since I am in independent studies and a lot of the time your busy with your US history class to let me know exactly what you want me to be doing. If you can't get the time to update it, at least post if world history students are suppose to be doing the same thing or not because I'm getting kind of bored doing the same things everyday and not knowing if thats what was intended for me to do. Please and thank you - Bri
